Sassy Baby. Grow up Cups and More Favorites.

BurritoBuzzSassyGrowUpCups.jpgIt is no secret that BurritoBuzz moms are always on the lookout for new sippy cups. We generally don’t like them. They are always leaking, or molding, or even better yet breaking. Its so annoying!  I really wish companies made made baby products better, but alas they are made to last for a short time. I have been introduced to my new favorite sippy cups and  I am already throwing out others to replace them with the NEW Sassy Baby Grow Up Cups! Sassy Baby has a whole new line of products and I am excited to share some of my favorites with you!

GROW UP CUPS

The best way to transition to an open cup with no lid is a cup that doesn’t have a spout at all. Sassy has created a cup my little girl calls her “big girl – no lid cup” and gives me the ease of actually having a lid to keep all those messes trapped. BK#2 was so intrigued that he actually started giving up his bottle! YESSSSS!!

About the Grow Up Cups.

  • Revolutionary 360° design – sip 360° around the rim with no spout or straw!
  • Available in 7 oz., 9 oz. and 12 oz. sizes
    • Both the 7 oz. and 12 oz. sizes are available in a single pack
    • 9 oz. cup is available in convenient double packs
  • Easy grip handles (sold with 7 oz. cups) can be removed and used with each cup size! > I wasn’t super impressed with the handles because they didn’t snap in or stay on the cups very well. They are adorable and work great, but made the cup a toy because BK#2 spent his entire time with the handle just playing with it.img_2998
  • BPA Free & Phthalate Compliant
  • Pediatric dentist preferred over spouted cup
  • The lid is easily taken apart into three pieces to make cleaning easy!
  • Lids are interchangeable within cup sizes! I love that you don’t have to even look to see if they match or anything. Snap the membrane on the lid, twist, and off they can go! img_2996
  • Silicon valve automatically seals when your child stops drinking to eliminate messes
  • Slender enough for toddlers to grip with one hand.
  • Grow Up Cups come in MANY different colors and prints, slogan cups, and even a fruit infuser cup with a little carrying handle!
    • The Infuser Cup is a natural way to flavor water. About 1/4 cup of fruit can put placed in the removable fruit infuser.
  • Price – A 9oz or 7oz  2 pack retails for $10.99 (Currently on sale on Amazon for $7.17!)  and one 12oz cup retails for $5.99.

These cups are awesome and super functional! Although they aren’t completely leak proof they definitely are leak resistant! If your child drops them and leaves them laying they might drip a little, or if they shake them up-side-down, yes they will leak, but sitting in their chair drinking at a normal they did not leak on them! The only real time i had an issue with the Grow UP Cups leaking was when BK#2 shook it playing. Really, most “sippy cups” leak when shook.

FIRST SOLIDS FEEDING BOWL WITH SPOONIMG_2965.jpg

  • Ergonomic shaped bowl offers a variety of single-handed grips for the caregiver
  • 2 divided compartments keep foods separate.
  • Snap-on lid for portability. – I wish the lid fit better. I trust it to keep foods cold in the fridge, but I would not put it in the diaper bag for travel out of fear it would pop off.
  • Includes  soft silocon-like Sassy Transitional Feeding Spoon
  • Assorted boy/girl colors
  • Price- $5.99IMG_2972.jpg

I cant express how much I wish I would have had this when BK#1 was an infant! The little spot for the spoon to sit is an amazing way to hold it when you’re feeding a child of any age! When BK#1 was a baby I lost track of how many times she would knock the baby food out of my hand! With this bowl you can hold it more securely. Its seriously the best design for a bowl that I have seen in a LONG TIME!

ON-THE-GO FORK AND SPOON SETIMG_2961.jpg

  • Travel case keeps child-sized utensils clean in diaper bag!
  • Properly sized for little hands. The curved handles make it so easy for little hands to get the food in their mouth without dumping it first. IMG_2973.jpg
  • Assorted blue and pink cases available
  • Price – $4.99 for the set.

My little ones did great with these utensils and the spoon is my favorite specifically, because it is so easy for babies to use on their own. The fork is very rounded and doesn’t stab tougher food that well.

    • Available in pelican or penguin characters

The Original Squeeze Company {Review + Giveaway}

As parents, we all love the convenience of squeeze pouches. Whoever thought to put food in pouches for kids is a genius in my book and deserves an award of some sort. Whether they’re pureed baby food pouches for babies, or applesauce pouches for toddlers and big kids, being able to take the cap off and hand it to your child with no spoons involved is awesome. My big problem is they’re not cheap (as you all know I’m a cheapskate). Puree pouches cost more than a jar of baby food and you can often get a big jar of applesauce for the same price you’d pay for 4 pack of pouches. And if you want organic pouches, you’ll be paying a lot more. So why not make your own puree baby food or buy a big container of recipe151yogurt or applesauce and put it in a reusable pouch? I recently discovered a company that has allowed me to do just that! The Original Squeeze Company created the original reusable pouch and they were sweet enough to send me several of their products to review!

The Original Squeeze Company is a family owned company located in Idaho, started by mom Kristin Ahmer. Kristin created The Original Squeeze (for babies 6+ months), the original spill-proof reusable squeeze pouch that is made of durable silicone and is 100% toxin-free. They will last for years growing with your child, while also saving you money instead of purchasing one-use pouches! They make pouches for everyone, Original Squeeze with Eeeze for kids 2+ and the Sport Squeeze for all ages!

All Squeezes are:

  • Dishwasher safe (top rack only)
  • BPA, PVC, and Phthalate freepouch5
  • Easy-to-assemble components
  • Naturally non-stick for easy cleaning
  • Freezer safe
  • Come in several sizes and colors
  • Not for liquids

I received all three squeezes for my family to try. The Original Squeeze was perfect for my almost 7 month old. It’s available in 2 ($13.99) or 4 ($14.99) ounce pouch and several colors. The spill-proof nipple-like spout makes eating a lot less messy. My little one loves yogurt but is quite messy, as she likes to grab the spoon and try to feed herself, but with the Original Squeeze, it’s a lot easier and more convenient to have her suck out the yogurt. I’ve also made my own purees and spooning them in the pouch is super easy because the neck is pretty wide. My four year old loves her Original Squeeze with Eeeze. The spout is free-flowing, making it easy for her to get her yogurt, smoothie, or applesauce out. It’s available in 2 ($13.99), 4 ($14.99), and 6 ($15.99) ounce pouches and is perfect for school lunches! Its lid (that is attached to the pouch so you won’t lose it) allows it to be closed and not have to worry about it spilling out. I was sent the Sport Squeeze ($18.99) which is so awesome! It an 8 ounce pouch and is great for smoothies. If you work out, this pouch is a must for protein shakes! It’s flip-top lid is interchangeable with any Original Squeeze, too. The included carabiner attaches to anything, so you can just clip and go.

If you have little ones who use pouches a lot or you just like the convenience of them without the high price, Original Squeeze products are for you! The quality is phenomefullnal and they will hold up through wash after wash. Since we received our pouches, all three of us have used them at least once a day. I love that you can also build your own Squeeze by choosing between 3 spouts (spill-proof, free-low, or flip spout) and ten trending colors. Little ones will love to pick their favorite colors! They’re super easy to wash and store, asor empty. The prices are a little high, but if you buy store-bought pouches often, it will soon pay for itself. Not to mention all the waste you’ll be saving our precious Mother Earth!

We love The Original Squeeze Company pouches so much, we’re giving away one of each to a lucky BurritoBuzz reader! One winner will receive: (1) The Original Squeeze, (1) The Original Squeeze with Eeeze, and (1) Sport Squeeze! It’s super easy to enter:

SiliKids Silicone Bags + Spoons {Review}

Silikids

Silispoon – Spoon + Teether $9.95

The SiliSpoon – a very different design from a normal spoon. It’s more of a scoop, with a larger and flatter surface area than a typical spoon. The handle is easy to grab for little ones due to the texture. The colors are fun and they hold up really well in the dishwasher.

My son struggled to eat with these. Anything that isn’t dense enough will fall off. Soup won’t stay in this spoon for sure. We tried a few different foods and I found them to be too wide. Perhaps when my son is a little older, he’ll be able to use these spoons.

He did love them for teething. He’s getting his molars right now and happily carried these around and chewed on them for hours. Even with him chewing on them, they’ve held up quite well.

s500774824218195250_p43_i6_w160

• Encourages independent eating habits
• Textured handles stimulate tactile experience
• Wide head makes it easy to scoop and holds food in place
• Great for soothing gums and little teethers
• Comes in 2 pack
• Dishwasher safe
• 100% silicone

Silibags – Reusable Silicone Snack Bags $11.95

Silicone bags – these are a great  idea. We are all looking for ways to reuse things so that we don’t have to buy plastic sandwich bags. However, the theory of this bag is much better than the execution. This is only good for dry snacks that are a bit larger, everything liquid or even smaller solid foods will fall out of the openings. These bags do not fully close, but instead have small hole closures that don’t work very well. In addition, they are so difficult to properly wash and dry. I hand washed mine a few days ago and getting them to stay open enough to fully dry was actually impossible.

While they can be warmed up in the microwave, I’m not sure that you’d need to as it doesn’t hold anything other than larger snacks. They do store flat, but overall I was unimpressed and would not use these over a standard sealable Tupperware container.

s500774824218195250_p42_i2_w160

• Stores flat
• Gusseted bottom allows the bag to stand up for easy snacking
• Food can be warmed up directly in the microwave
• Can be written on with washable markers and pen
• Replaces disposable plastic bags
• Comes in 2 pack
• Dishwasher safe
• 100% silicone

b.box bottle + dispenser {Review}

When it comes to babies and kids, convenience is absolutely necessary. When leaving the house with baby, the diaper bag needs packed with entirely way too much stuff to feed baby (bottles, formula, burp cloths), change baby (clothing, diapers, wipes), skin care (sunscreen, diaper cream, lotion) and the list goes on and on. My diaper bag is so heavy and bulky because it pretty much houses everything from my little one’s nursery except for her crib. The two things I can’t leave the house without are bottles and formula. I had the opportnity to try out and review the b.box bottle + dispenser which is ideal for parents on the go!

bbox_logo_with_bird_RGB

The b.box bottle + dispenser is a curved bottle with a formula dispenser attached to it. It is innovative for parents who formula feed! It’s also super easy to use and so convenient. Before leaving the house, add formula to the dispenser (the bottom has a cap that twists off, add formula and then put the cap back on) and attach to the bottle and add water. When baby is ready to eat, you twist the bottom of the dispenser and a piece twists through the bottom of the bottle and dispenses the formula. Just shake and feed! There is also a cap that can be put on the bottom of the bottle once the formula is dispensed or you can choose to use it as a conventional bottle. b-box-bottle-colorsb.box bottles are BPA, Phthalates and PVC free.

I packed it the other night when we went out to dinner to celebrate my mother-in-law’s birthday. My little one was a screaming mess for some reason (I think she’s teething) so I pulled the b.box bottle from my diaper bag, twisted the bottom to dispense the formula and started to shake it to mix it. Formula started leaking everywhere from the bottom! All over my baby’s face and my face. I made sure when I put the bottle together that all of the pieces were correctly placed and the dispenser was tight, so I’m not sure what the issue was. However, I used it three times since then and had ZERO leakage!

The bottle has so many pieces that have to be washed thoroughly after every feeding. So for me, the bottle + dispenser will only be used when leaving the house and just the bottle (without dispenser) will be used throughout the night or for a regular feeding during the day. It is a really awesome product, so innovative and really makes things easier when out and about with your little one. I give the b.box bottle + dispenser a 4 out of 5 stars, only because of the occasional leaking from the bottom and because of the amount of pieces and time it takes to wash the bottle + dispenser after every feeding (it is more time consuming compared to regular bottles). The price point is a little high at $20. I would like to see it a come down a bit. b.box has a ton of awesome producs for baby, be sure to check out all of their products here!

Food Ideas for a 1 Year Old

My 14 month old, Lucas, loving his food!

My one year old is finally getting some teeth, which means he can enjoy some of the many foods that we eat! Also, he’s very recently started to hate spoon feeding and is enjoying his independence. In finding healthy finger foods for him, I really struggled after a few weeks to give him variety. I’m blessed with a child that eats (nearly) everything I put in front of him; and I owe it to him to give him nutritious options instead of filling his little system with junk.

*Babies and toddlers should ALWAYS be seated and supervised when eating.*

Here is my ever-expanding list of good first foods, all of which are broken up in to dime-sized pieces or smaller. Feel free to add your suggestions in to the comments!

Whole grain breads, oatmeal English muffins (toasted or not)

Pastas (preferably wheat or whole grains)– We prefer spiral since they are easy to break up and provide plenty of area for breathing if it gets stuck in their throat.

Crackers (wheat, grains)— we avoid crackers with seeds since he doesn’t digest them well yet.

Cheerios (all flavors)

Graham crackers

Bananas

Avocados

Sweet potatoes

Peas

Steamed carrots

Squash/zucchini steamed, skinned

Sweet potatoes

Pears

Peaches

Strawberries

Blueberries

Raspberries

Kiwi (I remove the center and most seeds)

Cooked, shredded chicken and pork

Soft cheeses, cut into tiny cubes (I buy block Colby or string cheese)

Healthy meat cuts/slices broken up

Eggs (egg whites until 1)

Pancakes or pancakes with fruit mixed in.

French Toast

Beans and lentils (cut anything round in half)

Small pieces of broccoli, cauliflower, sweet peppers

Pasta salad mix

Mac N’ Cheese

Morningstar Meat Crumbles (soy often is not good for babies. Keep it to one small portion if you’re going to add soy in to their diet. I am a vegetarian, so I’ve tried to add a few vegetarian options in to my son’s meals. Quorn is a good soy-free option.)

Super small bits of apple (or, large chunks that they can chew on)

Pieces of green bean

It’s particularly important to find fiber rich foods for their systems, because up to this point their diets have been mostly liquid and puréed.

Also, my son seems to pick out the brightly-colored foods first, which is great because these are usually nutrient-rich! Raspberries, carrots, and blueberries are his favorite.

Kizingo Kids Self-Feeding Spoon Review

12011185_178572435809128_5459133675561276659_nTeaching your child to self-feed… easy enough, right? Not usually. It’s a slow process, and often takes teaching over the course of many months. My son is just now 13 months, and started self-feeding quite a bit around 8 months. He has great motor skills at this point to use his pinchers with both hands to grab foods. However, he’s really lacking teeth so he’s still eating a decent amount of pureed food.

I wanted to start getting a spoon in his hand. I know that most littles don’t really “self feed” with a spoon and fork until about 18 months and up, but being proactive never hurt anyone!

12208727_198398983826473_5718110090488828307_nThat’s where the Kizingo spoon comes in. They were kind enough to send me a trial spoon in “kiwi” (the spoon comes in a variety of colors.) The design of this spoon works so well to help babies get the right angle to actually get food into their mouths. I particularly liked that the spoon itself wasn’t a deep spoon, because my LO seems to have some issues getting food off of spoons that have a deep cup.

I started putting things onto the spoon that are thick and would stay on (peanut butter and cream cheese were great for starters.) My son did so much better than I expected! With some coaching, he got this into his mouth a few times on his own. I’m sure he’ll continue to improve as the months go on.

Kizingo Kids uses #whykizingo and explains that self-feeding is essential in helping to avoid childhood obesity. “Of children aged 2-5 years old, nearly 23% are overweight or obese. Among those that are, there is a 60% chance that they will stay overweight or obese throughout childhood, and into adolescence. There is a large and growing body of research that show that the period of time when kids are learning to self-feed – when they are transitioning to solid foods – is a crucial period when food habits are established.” fg

I’ve often wondered if I’m ever under/over-feeding my LO. I really let him guide me in when he’s hungry or had enough, and that seems to have worked well. As he starts self-feeding more and more, he’ll be able to learn his limitations on his own. Having a good tool for him to learn to self-feed will no doubt help this process. A standard straight-handled spoon certainly wouldn’t work as well for him as this curved spoon has.

So thanks to Kizingo for a product that seems very feasible! Can’t wait to see these on the shelves. For now, you can purchase them here.
